remove firmware password macbook air . I have been through plenty of websites and posts where everyone said you must take your macbook air or thunderbolt mac to apple to reset the firmware password. That is not true. I am going to tell you how its done. The method is simple but can’t be done by most people including the smartest techs and hackers because it requires special equipment.

about the macbook efi password …..

all laptops have a bios chip INCLUDING THE NEW MACS. The only difference is that apple uses a NEWER BIOS CALLED EFI . If you ask any apple tech they will tell you that macs do not have a BIOS. Thats a bunch of crap!!! All computers need a chip to give out instructions when you press the power button.  This chip on macs is manufactured by a company called MXIC6406LE and it is visible when you take off the bottom cover of your mac. MXIC EEPROM BIOS chips have been around for years. The process of resetting the password is done in one of two ways. The tech knows how to safely read the chip & decrypting the information on it breaking the password. Then reloading the firmware downloaded from apple. the second last case method requires the removal of the chip and replaced with another one that is programmed with new firmware. I used My own 2012 macbook with thunderbolt as a test machine.

here is some data on the mxic chip remmember these are blank and will need programming

step 1. I removed the password bios chip using a professional reflow machine.

step 2. programmed new chip (special equipment needed)

step 3 put chip in that has firmware on it using infrared soldering.

step 5 restart like new mac.

step 6 just added this on june 6 2012 and is very important ….. you must use a blank hard drive and a fresh install of your operating system. If you use your old operating system you run the risk of it auto resetting the ICLOUD MOBILE ME PIN LOCK.

If you have a macbook air you must send the ssd drive because it also needs to be unlocked.

This process will remove the macbook EFI password and Remove the system PIN LOCK these are 2 separate locks so if your computer asks for a 4 or 6 digit pin it means its double locked.

I do not recommend anyone with a radio shack soldering iron to even attempt this or you will damage your logic board!!!!         local customers are welcome

If I come today, it’s because of the big problem I have.
To make court, I have been swindled by a former classmate!!! During the transaction, it turns out that he had shown me only the guest session of the computer. I know i’m not good at all in computing there then I believed that everything was OK. Only, when I go back home, I notice whom I am on the session invited by the device. A password blocks the access has the main session.
I tried to call the guy! No answer. I try to connect it to internet, and … horror! 5 minutes later, the computer jams, makes noise, and a code 6-digit pine blocks the access.
I inquired and I fall only on things hopeless. This computer cost 1000 euros, almost one month of salary. No answer of the seller.

Yes I can take care of it. The reason why it happened now is because of your update. Every time you do a software update apple servers will check to see if owner locked the computer and will lock it on update it also checks the computers Efi bios to see if it has the settings to lock it. Anyway we can unlock and reset everything including software so it does not happen again.

I have read the many pages associated with their post about the .lock file and so far NOT ONE person had any success . I even tried it myself and it did not work. I think the whole post is misleading people into believing its software related when its not. the software or OSX just acts like a trigger and turns on all the locks and programs the onboard chips with the owners information and password so that it CAN BE IDENTIFIED BY APPLE AS TO WHO THE OWNER IS OR WHO SET THE LOCKS IN THE FIRST PLACE. IN OTHER WORDS YOU CAN DESTROY THE WHOLE MACHINE AND IT STILL CAN BE IDENTIFIED BY READING THE EFI BIOS CHIP.

apple will not do it at all without a proof of purchase. a apple authorized dealer will do it for about $120 but you will still be out of luck because no one will remove the 4 digit pin lock they will only remove efi password. you will be stuck with a machine that will start the installation cd or usb and then ask for the 4 digit pin that is stored on one of the chips onboard.

I can remove all the locks and any information that is stored on the chip of the motherboard you will be able to enter your own info as if it were a new machine and will be able to update without any risk of it locking again. The only reason it locked is because the update checks the bios chip wich contained info in it already.

Hi!!a couple of months ago i bought a macbook air from a third party site..(gumtree UK)..i went to the guys home and he showed me that it was working and everything was fine..a couple of days ago i decided to update to 10.8.2..so purchase it and update it..ufter update i got the 4 digits screen and surprize surprize..at the bottom it says this mac was stolen..call some number…well..it looks like i got scammed..if i go to apple store..i would try to go but they will want me to privide proof of purchase and how can i tell them i dont even remember where i bought it from…i dont remember the place…and because it says it was stolen i will probably loose it..what about the money i paid for£450..if i send you the board only would you be able to remove the pin lock and make it work..also…i want to be able to make updates in future and not to be afraid it will lock back..probably if ssd is wiped and the recovery partition is wiped i will have a new macbook air…macbook air Model A1369..please tell me if there is any chance of recovering this back or i lost my money!! I live in UK..

Your advice and guidance was invaluable as I eventually came right and found the chip.
I swapped it for one off a damaged board of same spec.
Then I installed the EFI via DVD.
Lastly I installed the OS X onto an empty hard drive and it worked just like you said it would.

So the way Apple has implemented the Firmware password has changed.

Before 2011 MacBook Pro one could either user the Casper policy to set
firmware password or script something along these lines:

# Replace $mode-value with “command” or “full”

sudo nvram security-mode=”$mode-value”


I’m guessing the Casper method does the same thing as this script but
neither works on the 2011 MBP. JAMF knows about it and is looking into
it but I haven’t heard of any workarounds other than manually running
firmware password utility.

you can try this, which takes the plain text password and obfuscates it properly where you can use the nvram command. I cannot take full credit for this script, as I asked a Unix community for help when I was messing with it

I’m not entirely convinced that it merely fails to set the password on the new MBPs. I’ve seen some very odd behavior on one; it won’t boot from some drives (it locks up while showing whatever EFI screen happened to be displayed). It’s possible CheckPoint is somehow responsible, but my suspicion is that Apple changed the address of the password in the nvram, and when it sets the EFI password it’s actually writing it over some other part of nvram, where it’s causing Bad Thingsâ„¢ to happen.

Has anyone else encountered anything like this?

If you can use something like pacifist and pull out this from the newest OS X install disk 

/Applications/Utilities/Firmware Password Utility.app/Contents/Resources/setregproptool

That should allow you to set EFI passwords. I have not tested this, but typically this should have command line arguments

The -c option won’t display any output you need to run echo “$?” to get the output of the last command in your bash shell. Also, it doesn’t clear unless you reboot, if you look at the caveats section of that post I made, I cover that bit.

NO ITS NOT THE SAME. they already contacted me and told me they are cloning the chips. i told them its a very bad idea. they are using the same serial numbered chip and cloning it. not only will apple servers catch on, they will realize and lock out that serial number from their system making all the computers with that serial useless. they will have a very many angry customers. Furthermore they just removing efi password not 4 digit pin lock. makes no difference when apple see the same serial accessing their server from different locations at the same time they will lock out all of them. I forgot to mention that they also void any warranties.

You are partially correct the data on the chip is not easily redone and in some cases reside in different areas on the motherboard. You are wrong about a $30 programmer because it will not allow you to read the data that you need because you are reading data across multiple chips . We use a logic analyzer that costs $3000 not $30 and a masters in computer or electrical engineering just to figure out what’s going on.

It is a microcontroller and not only a flash memory. Why would Apple use Atmel microcontroller during bootup? Most likely the picture given in the beginning of the article is wrong.

On the other hand if it is e.g AT45DB021D 2 MBit flash chip then it is a bit more; less than 10 bucks anyway. It can be programmed with tools costing less than 30 dollars *in place* or easily removed with regular tools and then programmed. The problem here is of course that you need something to put in the chip. Just wiping the chip wont do as EFI is program that does all sorts of initialization during boot phase. Most likely it contains some serial numbers and checksums too so dumping a locked EFI, modifying it and rewriting it back ain’t trivial. On the other hand I would assume EFI is stored elsewhere as it is megabytes in size whereas AT45DB021D contains only 256 kilobytes of space; plenty enough for passwords and other settings.

This is all guessing by the way so don’t take my word on this.

Firstly try to return it if there a phone number with the message. I have spoken to many people who purchased theirs from craigslist with the same issue. Crazy that even apple will not help you do the right thing and return it even if you contact them they will not release any information of who the owner was. The firmware does not reside on 3 different chips, find the right Atmel chip and replace that with a Gas powered soldering gun. You dont need a reflow machine or infra red soldering.

Another option is to purchase a SOIC 8 Pin Programming clip and program the .fd file which is on the restoration CD onto the chip and then solder back on the logic board and boot.

Your mac can be repaired under $20 with the right tools and confidence.

I have done this procedure on a MacPro that had a firmware password with positive results. The hard drive had been sold and no matter what I tried the machine was locked down. I downloaded the relevant firmware from Apple website and burned it to a disk. Inserted the disk then restarted the machine holding the power button till it started flashing. Then it started up from the disk into DOS or Terminal mode and a boot shell command had to be typed in. Then after restarting the machine went into DFU mode and the disk was installed onto the chip.
After all that I put a new hard drive into the machine and installed the OS with no problems. My only question is on the MacBook Pro 13″ i5 motherboard I have tried swapping the ATMEL chip but it made no difference, so which is the correct chip? I understand that the new firmware management resides on 3 different chips. Am I correct?

dmg file is a MAC disk image file you burn to a CD or USB. It contains the firmware.

it sounds like you did not delete all of your hard drives partitions when you installed both the operating systems. There are actually 3 partitions on the drive that need to be wiped. 1 the operating system 2 the recovery partition 3 the efi boot partition. The original owner or the person who sold it to you could have locked it down through Icloud. The lockpad setting was there the whole time in the bios and was waiting or listening for a command. The unknown owner or seller just triggered its activation via the internet. After we do our work the chip will be back to factory defaults (sleep mode) and can’t be relocked from anywhere as long as you use a fresh install on a completely blank Hard drive or just let us do the install.

From what you told me it got blocked after a week or two? That sounds like a mobile me or icloud pin lock that asks for a 4 digit password. That is not a efi password that is a pin lock. A Efi password gives you a picture of a padlock when you hold the “option” key after you press power. even if you do not have a efi password a pin lock will disable any chance of you installing or using the computer even if you can boot from disc. I can remove the lock or multiple locks if you send it in but the hard drive will have to be erased.

They have a “Security Register” which is split into 2 sections, much like the hash which is generated:

“The device contains a specialized Security Register that can be used for purposes such as
unique device serialization or locked key storage. The register is comprised of a total of
128 bytes that is divided into two portions. The first 64 bytes (byte locations 0 through 63) of the
Security Register are allocated as a one-time user programmable space. Once these 64 bytes
have been programmed, they cannot be reprogrammed. The remaining 64 bytes of the register
(byte locations 64 through 127) are factory programmed by Atmel and will contain a unique
value for each device. The factory programmed data is fixed and cannot be changed.”

This could make sense, and backup your theory.

Section 1: Fixed logic number
Section 2: hash generated by factory

on a macbook pro 2010-11 model a1286 atmel chip is next to the heat sync and is on the top side of the board you have to remove the motherboard and flip it over just to see it if I have time I will upload a picture.

I have a feeling that these hash codes are serial numbers embedded on the bios chip that apple has a master password to unlock it. in other words each chip has a unique master password that was set at the factory and not something that can be decrypted at all. These hash codes do not fit the pattern of any type of encryption at all.

I have tried different decrypters but had no luck. I’m sure however that if the algorithm that apple uses to decrypt this 33 character string is leaked/found it will be very easy to crack the passwords without replacing the logic board or any chips.

it won’t work as long as the firmware password is set you can not access any drive or any partition no matter what configuration. The bios knows what the original configuration was it knows the serial number of the original hard drive it knows the configuration of sectors etc. etc… you have to go to apple or send it to us there is no other way unless you got expensive equipment and a college degree in engineering or you can use it as a paperweight.

Well the reason we got this board was the Hard Drive had become corrupt (more likely dropped) and so impossible to access. Ergo the previous owner was locked out and now so are we. I did not have any problem with previous models cos let’s face it the firmware code was a joke to unlock before. I thought I would have it sorted by now…

What I did was I tried installing a HD with a fresh install of Lion on one partition and the lion installer on another partition. Usually, I have some success, not this time though. Should I try it with a blank hard drive with a single partition?

Okay so I have 3 damaged boards and I swapped out the ATMEL SSH chip (it also has 8 legs) I just figured we have nothing to loose anyway cos we on the other side of the planet and we can always put the chip back if it did not work )and besides, the computer is useless anyway. Well the result was unexpected. It made no difference at all. LOL. Same result. Have us the lock, the hash and would not read the disk in the ROM, even tried a different ROM. I know you don’t want to give it all away as its business and all, but you are right not many can do this sort of board work. So what am I missing?

If you wiped it out totally you will still get stuck replacing the whole chip because now the motherboard does not no what to do after you presses the power button. The key here is erasing the user data fields only not the whole chip. But if you are bold enough to try on your $1000 board go for it and let us know. Take extreme caution don’t say I didn’t warn you.

I did not see a ATMEL ATTiny microcontroller but a ATMEL 1048 which is a 24K EEPROM. I tried shorting pins 6 SCL and pins 5 SDA. This wiped the memory so I had an empty EEPROM.

The first 17 digits of the hash code is the Mac Logic Board number. The last 16 digit is a hexdecimal. So I think the 16 digit is what will give the password.

Most technicians know that for other mac models, one needed only to change the hardware configuration (e.g. amount of installed RAM) and then reset PRAM three times to force a reset of the firmware password. I presume this is not possible for MacBook Air because has no user-removable parts (since RAM is soldered to the motherboard, for example) but it is not clear what alternatives exist. Would you supply the EFI Atmel chip with firmware already flashed and ready. I have skills to replace Atmel Chip from the motherboard, but I don’t know how to flash a firmware in a new chip. I need for a Macbook Air model A1237 (2008/2009). Please let me know. Thanks and Regards
